What is the best free Office-style software for Mac OS 10.9?

Apple's alternative to Office is iWork. It's the most comparable alternative to Microsoft's productivity suite, only it comes free with every Mac. The interface is different, and will take some time to get used to, but if you're really interested in kicking Office to the curb, the iWork suite is the best alternative on Mac.

  1. The last OpenOffice version supporting Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), 10.5 (Leopard), 10.6 (Snow Leopard) is OpenOffice 4.0.1. Hardware Requirements CPU: Intel Processor.
  2. LibreOffice, Apple iWork, and Apache OpenOffice are probably your best bets out of the 5 options considered. 'Free, open source and cross-platform' is the primary reason people pick LibreOffice over the competition. This page is powered by a knowledgeable community that helps you make an informed decision.

I used to have NeoOffice, but they seem to charge for that these days and I'm not willing to pay. So what are some good free alternatives?

I need it to be able to open and save to Microsoft Office files (such as .doc) and contents looks the same when transferred from one and the other, but otherwise I'm not after anything especially elaborate, just something that works smoothly on OS 10.9, nothing buggy or resource intensive and nothing that will cause problems with other software.

I've got Pages (and Numbers), and although they're fine for most things, I'm looking for something a little better; specifically a word processor that allows me to use other fonts I have installed.

I appreciate all recommendations.
